Just passed the 100,000 Mile mark in my 97' Sunfire! Yeah for me!
So time to do the timing chain. I was reading the other post about not needing to take out the whole engine, but once I change the chain, does it need tobe be re-timed.
I mean as long as you match the shaft positions it should maintain the correct timing shouldn't it? Although I can see some logic in the previous questions...
I heard you need some kind of a DSM? to retime our cars? What is this and where would one pick one up?
if you arent really sure about it, i would just take it to a shop. you want the timing to be perfect. if you off a little, you could have problems getting it to start
That wouldn't be fun though... If I blow it up, I'll blow it up... Then spend 4 times as much to buy a new engine and have a shop put it in...
Few things here.
I dont know if these engines are interference or non-interference, non means if the timing chains breaks the valves and pistons wont hit, if they are interference then they will hit.
Secondly timing chains dont need to be replaced ever, that was back in the day of timing belts when they did.
- 2004 Cavalier - 124k, owned since new
they are interference engines

YES your chain does need to be replace....YES they are interference engines ....YES take it to a shop if you've never done it before....you want to buy a timing set with all the components to be safe
Okay, I HAVE done time chains before, just never on a fuel injected engine. I timed engines before, just never on injected engines. It's not like I'm going in to this completely blind, but I am just not certain as to how to time these things.
So, I reiterate my original question:
What do you need to do to time these engines? I was reading up and saw something about a DSM? To time these? What are they and do I really need one?
have fun wasting money and time.
if it was a belt i would say yes but you DON'T need to change the chain on a 2.2/2.3/2.4 unless you have a really loud noise from the chain.
otherwise it's plain stupid.
238 000km with original chain on the 98 2200
227 000km with original chain on my 2.3
350 000km on my frined 2.4 chain.
if you like wasting time and money, go for it. but just by looking at the way you ask your question, I can say that you shouldn't be touching your engine.
