Hey Guys,
I posted about this previously but I wanted to make it clearer so that maybe some of you guys could help me out, the MODE VALVE ACTUATOR,
http://images.wrenchead.com/smartpages/partinfo_resize/DUS/15-72112.jpg (2000 Sunfire Coupe SE 2.2) is laying down next to the pedals on the driver's side beneath the dash, dangling by it's red and yellow vacuum wires. I remember knocking it loose from it being tucked in the steering column, still disconnected. Appeared as if the previous owner hadn't found a place to put it so they tucked it up there for safe keeping. I believe from the name itself, that if I can reconnect it, it will solve my vent control issues. The only problem is WHERE does this darn piece go? I've posted on other forums, but nobody seems to have a clue. I've personally checked AutoZone's online repair website, nothing. Checked Haynes from my local auto store. Someone with a Chilton's looked, only one mention of it in a fuzzy exploded generic diagram. The only place online I can find it is on literally online parts websites. Does anyone have ANY idea where this thing connects to? ANY IDEAS WOULD BE GREATLYYY APPRECIATED
.
i would assume that that piece is what actuates the door in the dash, it would be in the center of the dash under everything. not sure how it would come out.. maybe try the interior forum, maybe look for pics in there of a stripped down dash that might show where its mounted. I can look in my cavalier this weekend, same thing but different I would assume. the top half of my dash is out so i might be able to see something.
Have a nice day.
I was taking leaves out of the blower fan on the passenger side and I saw the defrost/passenger side vent actuator, but I looked again on the DRIVERS side where the mode valve actuator was and couldn't find any spot for it. Ugh I wish I just knew where it was instead of ripping the entire dash apart to CHANCE maybe finding the correct location... Any other ideas anyone? Thank you Jordan for your reply though
!
I also have this problem, the previous owner installed an aftermarket alarm and this is just hanging above my petals, makes alot of noise clicking on stuff from my sub vibration, where does it mount back up an what does it do? A pic would be really helpful
Hmmm to install the aftermarket alarm where did the previous owner have to run wiring through. Possibly if the aftermarket alarm dislodged it you could trace back the location by looking in spots that were modded by the alarm?
I think that things also called a blend door actuator from my time selling auto parts.
Have you checked up by the heater core? Or you could try tracing the linkage or cable that comes off of the selector knob on the HVAC controls.

You should most definitely find it if you were talk the whole dash apart.. .atleast i would hope so..goodluck!
FINALLY found it. Ripped apart the whole dash today, ugh 6 hours, and found out the actuator was functional but a damn plastic connector broke off so I spent 4 of those 6 hours trying to devise a way to make plastic bond to plastic effectively enough to hold the actuator in the slot (which is BURIED next to the heater case mind you) while taking the strain of the vacuum arm opening and closing the vent door, finally settled on superglue. Don't know how long it will hold though :S, but I hope I don't have to take apart the dash again. Pain in the a** !
I always found a good 2 part epoxy holds well in situations like that. Either way glad you figured it out. I had this problem is my last car and never fixed it.

do you think CA will work alright to hold it? Because the problem with the 2 part epoxy is being able to clamp it to the slot, its darn near impossible lol and it doesn't want to stay in place, I have to hold it, while the glue/epoxy sets by hand and then let it go, and CURE before I drive, so you think in that situation CA will be okay? It's held for the last 2 hours because I was just driving tonight, but I wonder if over time temperature will degrade the bond considerable? Because it took 4 attempts at gluing to repair it today -_- .
CA is pretty good stuff. I used it on a 14 gram balsawood structure and held 1,000 pounds. You should be fine.

Well the CA didn't hold it -_- , the part where the arm connects to the door keeps sliding off, so I tried again today, epoxying it. Wish me luck :/ !
I also finally found where it hooks up to. It's above the gas, on the verry far right of the drivers side, connected to the radio/hvac controlls. It just shapes in, luckily mine in not broken. I'm just wonderin if the steel arm is supposed to connect to anything? I noticed it moved in and out when I vent the hvac vent changer/ knob at the far right.
