Right Rear Braking WAY too hard
Wednesday, April 18, 2012 3:03 AM
Hello,

I was getting my car inspected for this years registration and it failed because my right rear brake is braking too hard. They gave me a graph of the braking force of all four and as per their chart we could say the fronts were at 100% and the LR was 50% and the RR was 150%. I'm posting this here to see if anyone knows if the drum brake engagement could be adjusted at all. I appreciate any help.

Thanks,

You can adjust the rear drums. If it is grabbing that hard though, your probably leaking fluid out the wheel cylinders. The fluid is spraying onto the shoes, and causing them to lock up. This is fairly common on J-bodies.

Thanks for the response. I've never seen a shot drum brake cylinder, would if be obvious if I open it up to see if it's leaking fluid?

+1

Mine started doing this on the LR when the slave cylinder went bad. You'll probably pull the drum off and find all kinda @!#$ in there. Get you a nice can of brake cleaner, and go nuts.

I'm going to have to say leaky wheel cylinder as well.

So the drum wont budge off of the axle. The inside of the wheel was also gooped so I think you guys were right.

Yep, you need a wheel cylinder.. and to get the drum off you have to hit it very hard with a big hammer a couple times to break the corrosion around the hub.
