okay so i have an 04 cavalier ls its lowered with ground control coilovers, when i lower it to its max every time i go over pumps on the road there's a huge smashing noise. The whole dash rattles and i have no clue what it is. I was thinking strut mount maybe,, but when i raise the car up 1/2 inch the smashing isn't as extreme,, and another inch the noise seems to almost go away. Any help would be nice before I start replacing everything and end up having it be the wrong thing. Thanks.
Are there little rubber bumpers around the shock shaft, if there are, those are bump stops and you are hitting them, which wont normally hurt anything but its terrible for handling and ride. Now if you dont have them then that sound is the piston inside the actual strut hitting the bottom of the housing and you're significantly reduced the life of the shock and I would be surprised if they're not already blown from this happening.

Didn't even ask what kind of struts and shocks he has??? Are they stock? If yes then this is your problem.... If not go get the suspension checked!!
