Wheel bearing? (diagnosis..not asking how to)
Saturday, July 09, 2011 12:11 AM
For the past 3 months, I've had this noise coming from my right front wheel(clearly was the right front, now i cant tell which side, i only know it's the front)...First off, it's not the grinding, vibration kind of noise that I heard when I did my left front wheel bearing. The noise goes with speed, not Rpms, 30mph it's at it's loudest but still very noticable at 60mph (maybe the wind noise reduces the noise)....only way to describe the noise is a "wub bub bub bub" kind of like a rubbing noise. Can actually feel a "thumping" on the floor, feels the same in passenger and driver seat. The past week, it's gotten so bad, i cant tell which side it's coming from anymore. I just recently had it on the lift 2 days ago, nothing is lose, the wheels don't wobble at all, nothing is rubbing. Driving today i did notice my steering seems to shift a tiny bit, nothing at all crazy, but it's new. My friend's eclipse's wheel bearing made this same noise, the only thing different was the fact his wheel was literally wobbling about to fall off, i think his rotor saved it from falling off scraping the caliper all around. But my wheel is solid. Tire pressure is good, wheels are all ballanced. Can't figure it out...

A good way to test to see if your wheel bearing is bad is when your going a good amount of speed, say 20-30 mph turn your wheel slightly to the left and right. If the noise gets louder on whichever side, that is the wheel bearing that is bad.

I actually did that today at 30mph, going straight the noise is loud rubbing/bumping noise(nothing is touching)...when i turn right, it quiets down but changes to a grinding sort of noise(not the humming noise), when i turn left it doesnt change much....But i really can't seem to figure which side it's coming from, although when it wasnt as loud, it was clearly my right wheel. Also 10k miles ago i did the left wheel bearing.

Right wheel bearing?

Change the right one then, more than likely the problem

Another way I like, is to raise and support the car on jacks and take the 12&6 o clock position and move left to right, and 9 to 3 position and move up and down, if it's a wheel bearing your going to have Some sort of play. It's also a way to feel for any other kind play in suspension.

The noise you describe is what my left one sounded like and when exactly.

The turning left and right has never worked for me on the fronts, but works great for rears.

No play as of 3 days ago when i had it on the lift, but my steering pulling all sorts of directions only happened 1 day ago so now there might be some play, ill have to check again.

My first one had no play, just vibrations, humming and grinding noises, this sounds different, but my friend's wheel bearing sounded like this. Only difference was when his got this loud, you could see his wheel was legit about to fall off, mine is still tight...maybe my axle nut is holding it together? Last wheel bearing i did, once the axle came out, the whole hub assemble fell apart with ease.

Never had one fall part. The axles nut is going to keep pressure on it. When I replaced mine recently it was still together no play, but when you turned it by hand you could hear it, and it was rough.

wheel bearings are usually diagnosed on a hoist, with someone listening underneath the car and someone up in it driving at 60km (30?miles) to 80km (40?miles). definately sounds like a wheel bearing issue though. start by replacing the right side.

Replaced the right one, "wub bub bub" noise is gone
Did the "string" alignment, my steering is straight...atleast for the most part, its alot better till i get on the machine for free again.

Now, when i turn right, i hear a slight grinding noise, which is wierd, because both front wheel bearings are new, left has 10k miles at most....ill just leave it till it gets worse since the car makes alot of strange noises, hard to pin point what's what until it's really loud

My steering always did this, if i make a hard right(near steering lock), the car will pull to the right for a while then slowly even out...same with hard left turns....Maybe strut bearings?

mine sounded bad but never had play. you know a way to tell take a stethascope with tire off and slowly spin the wheel it takes a little strength but works well for me I do it just for extra assurance that its my issue

i barely hear it even with the music off, so ill just wait for it to get worse...i dont get how it only has 10k miles and making noise though lol but whatever it's nothing...

my steering issue bugs me though

I need to buy an air compressor, I miss working at a shop with 2 giant ones...man.

I usually just use the 2 foot breaker bar becuase it's easier to bring that out to the driveway instead of hooking up the compressor and the hoses, also much easier clean up.
But with the wheels off the ground, it's hard to break loose the lug nuts and that axle nut...forget about it haha the gun took it off like it was nothing. Ive got a small 4lb(or 4 gallon, dont remember how it's measured) compressor which after taking like 4 lugs off, you gotta wait for it to fill back up for it to have it's full power back, but in this summers heat, it's better then struggling with anything.

Don't know if this is a wheel bearing issue. I hear a noise coming from my front end when I am turning to the right at medium to high speeds. No noise when driving straight or turning left. But, there also is a noise when braking. It almost sounds like a bearing, but I am not 100%. any suggestions would be helpful.

Is it clicking?

Put it in the air, Go at 30mph as you described as being the loudest. Take a stethoscope and put it up to the knuckle and listen to which one is making noise.

No clicking noise from what I can tell....it is more like a growl.

Another thing I like to do...is lift the front up, and shake from the 12 and 6 position, and 9 and 3 position. Where you have movement, is bad. Especially if you say you hear a growl, you can then assume that bearing is bad.
