okay after the car sitting for another 6 months i got the trunk close enough to finished, gave the car a wash and took it out today for the first time. drove it for maybe a half hour normal cruising speeds, maybe got up to 55 mph max. after a half hour or so i started smelling coolant. stopped at my work and noticed coolant had came out of the overflow tank and that i believe was what i was smelling as it had dropped down on gotten on the bottom of the motor and was smoking a bit. i felt the overflow tank, it was very hot. i squeezed both rubber hoses leading to the radiater and neither of them felt buldging but in 11 years with the car ive never had this issue. now first off my aftermarket temperature gauge isn't connected yet and that right now is making it harder to know if there is really an issue. i just made another post about trying to find the fitting that goes on the back of the motor so i can connect my gauge. but just worried that im overheating. i know on a v8 that if the thermostat was stuck closed you hose would end up bulging. but im not sure where the thermostat is on the eco or wether its the same style thermostat setup as a v8. if i was low on coolant would it be coming out the overflow? i wouldnt think it would be i could be wrong. let me hear some opinions.

So the thermostat on the ecotec's are on the back of the engine, under the exhaust manifold. I'm dealing with an overheating too, and the Engine Coolant Temp. Sensor is also located at the rear of the engine. I wish I could post a pic right now where everything is, but you should be able to see it, of course wait until the engine is completely cooled before you go trying to look for it.
umm, not sure, btw I found out that on the ecotec's its a M12 x 1.5 thread size, to screw the sensor into the block.
I would do a coolant flush and refill.I would also replace your upper and lower hoses if over 4 years old(suggested time to do this) and I do btw.I would replace your thermostat and radiator cap and see if this improves the issue that popped up today.Yes a stuck thermostat can cause backpressure on any(I do mean any) coolant overflow bottle.I will not contemplate any other issues until after you do this.I seriously would do this being this came into the picture here lately.A car sitting for periods of time can cause issues with said problems like you have now.Do the flush, refill, new hoses if ovr the age suggested and then reavaluate things from that point.Ok
I had a similar issue, the coolant tank cap had lost it spring tension and was letting the coolant push past the seal. Changed the cap as all was good.

RIP JESSE GERARD.....Youll always be in my thoughts and prayers...
picked up antifreeze and a thermostat at autozone today. they didnt have a cap. trying to think how the overflow works, the hose that lets the fluid leak out. is that up in the neck where the cap is? can't picture it here at work. because i know the fluid came out of the hose and not the lid itself. and can anyone verify the heater line size for me? buddy ben thinks its 3/4" id like to pick some up on the way home instead of going home. cutting some hose off to bring to the store with me.

The overflow hose is at the top, comes out within the neck of the cap.
The heater hose is 3/4".

if the caps not on there tight, it would cause a leak, overheating issue, sure.
