When I drive straight, I hear a rubbing sound, but when I turn left or right the sound goes away. The sound seems like it is coming from the driver's side front wheel.
First, does this sound like a faulty wheel bearing? Which side should I replace? Is this an easy job I can do with basic tools or is it difficult?
bearings sound more like a grind that usually comes an goes with opposing curb weight.
Bearings are usually a dull roaring type of sound that gets pretty loud at high speed. If you change them, it's best to do all four at once.
I took another listen to the noise and it only goes away on left turns. I thought it was on both right and left. Is it possible that it could be the CV axle??? I don't have access to a stethoscope to listen to the bearing, etc....
bearings make a humming or as RPP said, dull roaring noise, you can feel it when you put it in neutral at like 50 and push your foot on the floor, you can feel where its coming from like vibrations
goes away when you turn left, its the right side( driver side)
simple fix, advance autozone has the whole hub for 50 dollars, pull the wheel and rotor, the axle nut is 28mm i believe, not sure...either use breaker bar or impact gun for it, then spin the hub and take off the 3 star looking bolts(torx screws i think its called) then you dont need a hub puller, put the nut on the axle barely and hammer the nut, not the axle, hit the nut until it comes loose and thats it, its off....once its off, spin it and you should be able to feel the grinding, mine actually fell apart when i pulled it...can be done in 20 min if you know what youre doing
If youre wheel bearing are worn out They make a metal to metal sound, Also sounds like crushed gravel sound. I just replaced my front wheel bearings for the 2nd time in 2 years. Thats what they were doing both times they worn out. i would jack up the front of youre car and put the car in neutral turn the tries by hand and get a better idea where the sound is pin pointed.
An Axel will make a rubbing or swooshing sound, when the boot is torn. That may be all it is, eitehr or it is easy no matter what one.
