timing chain loose, help!
Monday, July 12, 2010 3:02 PM
so... its almost like my tensioner doesnt have enought pressure to push on the chain... so its making it a bit loose, i changed tensioners from my old motor to the new one, same thing. it only does it when its loping... any ideas? my oil gauge is leaking, you think that could make my oil pressure lower and cause this?

any help would be awesome!

Well, in a Ecotec the tensioner on the timing chain is hydraulic, meaning there is already a set amount of fluid thats in there keeping tension. So, my advice would be to go and buy a new tensioner. I would also replace the chain as a added precaution. Ive seen them snap at 65-75,000 miles, and since yours is boosted (charged), I would do it anyways. Its not to bad to replace, and easy enough to time especially since the new chains have links in them that are diffrent colors and all you have to do is line them up with the notches on the sprockets and boom, done. But if your chain is loose, bad things can happen, and is usually means ur guides are worn and needing to be replaced, or your tensioner is just going bad. Check your guides since there plastic they wear through pretty easily, and swap out that tensioner just for good measure. I know Napa sells a pretty good timing kit, with new guides, sprockets, chain, and pretty much everything you will need to do the timing chain the right way, but it is pretty pricey, but again it comes down to 1-200 bucks for a good timing chain kit, or 1-2000 bucks for a new motor or just a new head. Goodluck!!
