hey all,
i have a 99 z24 and my passenger side brake light bulb stopped working about 6 months ago. So I checked it and the base of the bulb had been burned, melted infact. So I put in a new bulb and a few days later the same thing happened again; so i put in a new socket. It worked fine till now, but the same thing has started happening again, melted bulb base. I checked the voltage and its live all the time, high current, whereas the drivers side is fine. There was a burning smell too.
Does anybody know anything about this problem? Is there a short circuit somewhere, is this dangerous with the burning smell from the socket?
thanks
if i were you i would stop hooking lights up to it if it keeps burning. i remember something like this happening to my 98 cavalier but it was so long ago and i don't remember how i fixed it. try getting a low watt bulb for it. you are using stock bulbs i hope. check for any stripped wiring along that bulb as well. but in the mean time, stop hooking bulbs up to it until you can figure out what is wrong. this same thing actually happened with my headlights that i had a low watt harness and i was using bulbs that were higher wattage and it burned them to pieces so i got low wattage and it worked fine. it sounds to me like the same thing for your bulbs, make sure you use the recommended wattage and that your harness looks okay yet. it has to be one of those two things or a bad fuse.
i am using stock bulbs so i dont think that is the problem. Also the burning smell is coming from the socket even though i have not had a bulb in it for a week, infact i just went and checked it now after the car has not been driven all day and it still smells, so i removed the socket completely.
I will check the fuse, do you think that could be causing the problem?
i have checked the fuses they are fine. I think that it must be a short circuit somewhere but i have no idea where?
Anybody got any ideas where i should start?
Are you using the correct wattage bulbs? My buddy was getting some cheap knock of bulbs, and he had the same problem in his 03 cavalier.

im using proper GE bulbs. I know there is a problem with the wiring becuase there is burning smell even with the socket removed.
