ok I have a 97' cav 2.2. I changed the altenator and now i seem to have an overheating propblem. the gauge is getting to about 3/4 of the way to hot where as normally it sits in the middle. It is spitting the water out of the overflow. there are no leaks in the line, i put a new termostat in and i checked the fan/relays. any ideas?
is this while driving or just sitting at an idle? does the fan come on?

Go to a GM dealer and buy a new pressure cap for the coolant reservoir....
Let us know if you're lucky...here's hoping it's something simple.....
did you burp the system? there's a metal line going across the front of the block and a bleeder.
Your car may do 13 sec @ 103 mph, but my car does 146db @ 35 hz.
It is spitting the coolant out. it does not do it at an idle but if i drive it for a couple miles it needs more coolant. I havent burped the line but im not sure thats the problem. Will try it but since it isnt getting all the way to the red not sure what it is.
If you are sure the fan is working I would put in a new water pump and flush the radiator. You should have done the water pump while the alt was out a new one is like 20 bucks or less. I have seen the pump blades rust away inside the housing and not move the coolant well enough. Replace the cap also. Best of luck.
Gonna pull the reservoir check for crancks/leaks then do a back flush. Got a kit to do at home.

For me, I had the same symptoms, coolant pissing out here and there.
The pump and thermostat replaced, the radiator was then flushed, and now it is fine... seemingly.
