Can't be a seized motor......can it?
Monday, December 21, 2009 11:06 AM
So i was idling in my friends driveway, and it just stalled on me. Soft stall too, nothing loud or shaky. Tried to start it a couple of times, but no good. Car will turn over but will not start. Almost started twice but sounded like it was out of gas, even though it wasnt'

Took it to crappy tire, and they said that my motor is seized and i need a new one. I can't belive that this is true. They said that my car had no oil in it, but that can't be true because i just did a oil change less than a month ago. They added oil (too much) and still no start. but will still crank

I know that it is possible for a motor to sieze from no oil, but shouldn't the oil light come on? and they didn't add much oil for it to show too much on the dipstick

if anyone has any idea of where to start or what would cause a car to stall out of no where( i kno theres a lot) or if anyone has had or heard of a similar case i would greatly appreciate your input. I drove about 150kms that day and there were no wierd noised or feelings.

It can't be a seized motor ,....can it?

worst case scenario i guess is a motor rebuild.

noob question but how to your "un-seized" a motor? Just take everything apart and put it back together again? Replacing the obvious of course.

take the car somewhere else.

motor turns=not siezed.

yeah.. you would definitely know if it had seized on you.. like the guy above said.. if the motor turns, it cant be seized and if you were running on no oil, you'd of noticed that too...

leave to ol crappy tire to say something like that... lol...

too hard to tell why its not starting... clogged/broken fuel anything... line, filter... do you hear the fuel pump come on when you turn the key to on?

Don't trust crappy tire mechanics unless it's about which size bulb to put in your headlights. But even then they have a book you can look it up for yourself

Glad to hear you all agree with me on this one.

I got the car towed to a private shop and the owner assured me i would get a proper diagnosis this time. He also doubts that it's seized.

I'm hoping he will attempt to turn the engine over by hand to confirm it's not seized. if that is possible with our cars.

fingers crossed

seized means stuck.
...as in will not turn.

if it turns with the starter, that means it will turn by hand, and therefore is NOT seized.

This. As a nation, we really need a basic maintenance/automotive knowledge course to be made standard to get a driver's license.

if people knew a little about their cars, then they wouldn't be able to.

can we add how to drive a car/ rules of the road too?
because they seem to have left a majority of that out of driver's ed in the past few years.

How to drive a car, rules of the road How to drive on the interstates ie freeways how to drive 35 45 whatever through a construction zone when it says that is the speed. How to drive 15 in a school zone, heck if we were to list everything that they left out we'd be here till christmas 2012.

that is true.. But i have little faith in that happening... lol

I once had a woman (i'll leave race out of it.. lol..) drive by me with a HUGE cloud of smoke following her brand new lexus... she pulls over so as im walking by, being the nice guy that i am, i stop to try and help her out... the smell was pretty obvious.. i take a look in the car.... parking brake on.... lol.. she was mystified, had no idea what it was... so had obviously been driving around like that all day...

check spark and fuel pressure. i would bet its a fuel issue.

Check the fuel pressure regulator on the rail. I bet it's bad. I've already had two of them fail. Sent gas into the vacuum lines, essentially flooding the car.

It was the fuel pump. apparantley you have to replace the whole sending unit.

pockets are much lighter now, but car runs fine....

Tip, keep your gas allways above 1/4 since gas is what cools the gas pump, this should help it last long.

I'm pretty sure that's what killed my pump. I"m constantly running on my gas light.

Lesson learned.
