I have a 96 2.4 cav and lately it has been idling weird. I recently changed the map and tps sensor because the car was sputtering. After changing those two items the car doesnt really sputter anymore, however whenever the car is in park or neutral, the idle surges up and down but when its in gear it idles fine. Any idea what the cause of this could be?

what about your plugs, or your fuel filter are all your wires ok .

Sounds like a vacuum leak to me

Vacuum leak or idle air control IAC on throttle body is dirty or going bad.

changed the fuel filter, should i change the iac or can it just be cleaned

one question, is your a/c pump on or off at the time of the surging? I ask this because my girlfriends car does the same thing, and at first I thought it was the IAC but then i noticed that the car doesn't surge when the A/C pump is off. Some settings of the heater will cycle the pump, and if your pump is going bad, that could be the problem. We're just using the settings that don't cycle the A/C until this spring when we'll replace the pump. hope this helps.
