How to check timing tensioner

Guys,

To check the timing tensioner - do I just jack up on the engine, remove the mount and then remove the screws on the timing cover? is it that easy?

Can I run the car with it off....how much oil is going to spray?

To verify thats the problem, I need to bring it up to 2500rpm to hear the noise - which Im pretty sure is the tensioner.

Whats your advice, experience?

You cant run a car without the timing belt tensioner, how do you thinkt it is going to run with all the slop in the chain, it wont.

I think he was asking if you can run the car with the valve cover off.

Yep -can I take the Timing cover off and run the car to verify the noise is coming from the tensioner/chain?
