rod knock: what to do

ok i have yet another rod knock question. ive done some searching but havent really found what im looking for..

heres the deal: i bought a 00' Z24 and now im in the process of "re-doing" it. basically a new project. well it has a rod knock but it doesnt seem like a typical knock to me, unless its in an early stage or something i dunno. is there anything else it could possibly be?...i drove it the other day and i could feel alot of it in the clutch pedal if that makes any sense. and it sounds like its coming from more of the top than the bottom, but i dont know, maybe im crazy. i dont know a ton of stuff about cars, and i figured i would just gut the car out and replace it, you know, but now im anxious to get the car going..

but i guess i want to know whats the best way of fixing a rod knock. in a perfect world i would love to eco swap but after buying the car and hauling it home with the price of gas and everything i just dont have the money to do the swap. and i would like to get this car running asap. it still runs and drives, just "knocks" like a bitch so basically its a ticking time bomb.

and every 2.4 that i find has higher mileage and they want 800+, if it is indeed a rod knock, is it possible to just swap blocks? or would it be more of a pain in the ass and expensive than just dropping a junk yard engine in?

i guess im just looking for guidance on what the best route to go is...i dont know, its kind of a rant too, lol...

any comments or anything would be helpful.....

If your feeling it in the clutch pedal.... it could just be your TOB / slave cylinder..... it could have gone bad... or something in the clutch area... I'de have to drive it though to really have any idea...

But... the only 2 ways to fix a rod knock is to either tear the engine apart and fix it or just put another engine in there.

You would probably be better off to swap it out for a salvage yard engine than to try to find a complete block somewhere..

Rod knock = expensive unless you find another engine cheap.... to be honest if you cant afford $800 you might not be able to fix it unless you get lucky and find something cheap and know enough to do it yourself.

Hi,

Tell us more please

When does the sound occur?
On acceleration or on de-acceleration?
Is it a quick series or raps or a constant ongoing noise?
light rapping or heavy thunking?

You say that you feel it in the clutch pedal, when do you feel it, when you initially push it in, letting it up, downshifting, up shifting????

Did you check your motor mounts? During certain stages of driving the torque on the engine and drive train causes the motor to move around significantly in it's mounts. IF the rubber is bad or damaged the motor will touch metal on the body and transfer noise and vibration into the car. This is actually a very common problem.

Let us know
Dave
