Can it be replaced (reasonably) with the engine in the car ?

It can be done in the car without to much trouble. I am not aware of a service interval though.

If you are not aware of a service interval, what would be signs to look out for? Ie. What would signify that it needs to be changed?

When you feel like changing it, there is noise, or it snaps i guess.

The advised milage to replace the timing chain (if just to prevent something from happening) is 100K.

At the milage you have... although you might not need to.... it wouldn't be a bad idea.

Phil, a timing set replacement (includes chain, guides, tensioner, sprockets) on an LD9 isn't something you approach casually as there's significant disassembly required. Part of the design intent of these engines was that these parts (and others, including the water pump) were supposed to last the life of the engine. While there are widely varying reports of what that actually is, on your engine I'd replace the water pump too as you're in there anyway and it will never be (more) convenient. (There is a water pump procedure sticky in the Library->FAQ->Maintenance, that would give you an idea of what's involved in the overall project.)

Not much dissassembly at all to do it. Just takes time.

Thanks Gents. Having done my Chrysler 2.7L last year (3 timing chains, 3 tensioners, internal water pump), I'm not afraid of the job on the 2.4. I just wanted to make sure it was 'do-able' on the 2.4. This particular one has nearly 180K on it.

Whats the associated noise to look out for? I don't have any noises - but it would be nice to know just in case.
