97 Sunfire that dies everytime you turn the wheel far enough, only to the left side and usually in reverse. Happend yesterday on the freeway and now has me a little more concerned than before. Has anyone EVER heard of anything like that? thanks in advance

Possibly a bad steering pump.

you know, since we got this car a year ago i have been wondering about the power steering feeling a lil stiff this whole time, could be onto something...but how would i know for sure besides just flat out throwing money at it and replacing the pump on a hunch?

Lol....

Oh, and my steering has always been VERY touchy, but easy to turn, too easy if you ask me.

I have noticed with my car, when I turn the steering wheel at idle, my rpm's drop about 200 rpm's. I agree with the p/s pump...

98 z24, few upgrades, nitrous on the way!

I can't say for sure on the '97 and actually I can't even say for sure on my '05 (for which I am duly ashamed) but it may be something as simple as a bad power steering sensor. There's a pressure sensor in the pump that tells the computer when to boost the engine speed to compensate for movement in the steering. Some call it a sensor. Some call it a switch. Both do the same thing. If it goes bad the ECU won't be able to tell when there's a high demand on the power steering pump and it will eat horsepower and bog down the engine. It may even stall it as is happening to your Sunfire.
