Hello All,
My wife brought home a 98 Sunfire (Extreme?) and I need some help with it.
Seems the manuals does not match the car.
The engine does not match the pictures the distrubator cap is above the transmission.
So for I know the following;
Vin 1G2JB1245W511471 -(does not match my manual either)
Trans 2W5711471 -4 speed atomatic with traction control i think ,anyway a buton on the shifter.
The Engine says 2200 SFI the serial number has not been found yet (not where the book says it to be.)
This thing is a slug until about 2500 rpms then it lighst up.
Did they make an extreme sunfire? or is this some kind of clone and if they did what is special about it.
What's with the engine and trans being diferent than other's pictured in the manuals?
We drove it from seattle to Texas last week it does great on the highway although the brake and abs light will not go out, master cylinder is good, the booster is good ,new shoes rotors and drums turned, and the system was flushed all by some goodyear shop in seattle while my wife was visiting family. On the way home the dang light came on and will not go out.
Anyway any help are directions to look for info would be great.
a good start i screwed the number up 1G2JB1245W7511471, No did camera today but the logo is oval with extreme in the center. Located behind the doors on the risers
Looking for service manuals although i have found the references in the chilton closer on the diagrams, the book has not got the right photo for the 98-00 2200 engine though.
thanks for info so for.
The Haynes manual covers your car. You could always get one of those. Try e-bay to find a replacement manual for a 1998 sunfire. The extreme package is just some stickers, nothing is different from a base sunfire with whatever options you have. Judging by my experience with my dad's automatic grand prix, If your ABS light is on, neither your ABS or your traction control are working. This can have many causes but I would look at sensors first. I *think* sunfire traction control can only be disabled by clicking the e-brake on one click and not by a switch but I have a standard so i don't know for sure, but if that's the case that might be an Overdrive button since you have a four speed. Again, not sure on that. And you don't have a distributor but you do have ignition coils. That's all I can help with so far but this site has a ton of info that can help you.

There was no "eXtreme" Sunfire. Just "dealer rice" slapped on it in hopes of making it bring more money. The 2.2 engines were a little different in the 95-97 models. In 98 there were a good many changes to the motor and a few visual changes such as the valve cover and intake, which is why the motor pictured may look different from yours.
the button on the shifter is the traction control button.
