it's a 97 cavalier with a 2200 engine it turns over like once and then it makes a really loud ticking noise..... is this the starting motor?

check the battery connections. make sure they are clean and tight.
More than likely its the starter.
Loud ticking noise is typical of low current from the battery. If car starts fine when boosted, then look for battery or charging system problems.
