dealers aparent lack of ability to fix my car

we just bought a second cavalier, this one is for my wife, its a 1998 with a 2.2. check engine light keeps comming on. when we first looked at the car, the check engine light came on. We told the dealer that we liked the car but needed this to be fixed before purchase. they assured us it was repaired, so we bought the car. 1 day later the check engine light came on. we called the dealer and dropped it off. the again assured us it was repaired. we picked it up and drove it a few days. it came on again. its producing a code P0341 sometimes accompanied by a code P0335. im getting annoyed, every time we drop the car off, we have to take 2 cars and its adding up with the gas. not to mention its a hassle for my wife not to have her car for a day. anyone have any idea what is wrong with this car, im getting sick of the run around and i just want to get it fixed. any advice i should give the dealer on repair. i dont think their mechanic knows what the hell he is doing or this would have been fixed already. if they cant fix it, then they need to pay someone else to fix it.
PS check engine light ONLY comes on SOMETIMES when you start the car. it doesnt happen all of the time and it doesnt come on at all if the car is already running and started without throwing a code.

i hate OBD II and i love my 91. its so simple, everything OBD II has always created a headache for me. my older cavy just runs and runs, no too many issues that can set off the check engine light.

The P0431 is catalyst ineff. code.
The P0335 is a crank position sensor code or circuit malfunction code.

The first thing I would have them check is for exhaust leaks, if you cant hear any that are obvious more than likely they are'nt big enough to cause an issue. Another quick check would be to shake the catalytic converter and see if it rattles. If it does you almost definatly have a bad cat which explains the 0431. ITs basically either the Cat or the post cat (downstream) 02. Given all the wiring is good and connections are tight and watersealed. Either one of these fixes (espeically the whole catalytic converter assm. is not cheap, probably why they just cleared the code and gave it back to you)

The P0335 is a Crank Position sensor, looking at the wiring diagrams for your 98 tells me neither of these ground at a common point so the two problems are more than likely unrelated. You could do the crank sensor yourself with basic hand tools and a little forearm blood.

Either way, they have to make good on it..tell them your mechanic friend knows that all your doing is clearing the codes and that it needs to be fixed. You need to be persistant however.

i know that clearing the codes is NOT repairing it, just avoiding it. im also not getting a P0431 if you read my post its a P0341 camshaft position sensor code. i want them to fix this car and stop messing around. im going to call them tomorrow. im going to be their worest nag until it is right.

Also, ask them to provide you with a temp car while it is getting fixed, as they have caused you a lot of inconvenience.

SOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry about the dyslexia...

Anyway, more than likely something simple within the wiring harness or the sensor itself.. I would bet its a weak sensor since the car still runs and starts without too much difficulty.

Having said this it could simply be an issue with the wiring since it wont set right away.if the self check does not catch it.

I hate stealerships...
