Car was overheating pretty badly, this turned out to be the culprit. Never heard of this happening before:
wow, have never seen a metal impeller do that before.
i have. i've even see impellers worn/corroded to the point of just being for lack of a better descriptor, a washer on the shaft. actually not all that uncommon for cheaper rebuilt water pumps.
