another a/c ?
Tuesday, June 24, 2008 4:08 PM
Where do I purchase a "sniffer" and are they hard to use? Will it have directions for me to use it? And about how much does one cost? I am pretty sure it is a leak in the lines, because I have added feon twice and it works fine for a day or so then gradally gets hotter over the course of around 2 or 3 days. Does anyone have a picture of the routing of the line or can give me a detailed description of where the lines are routed besides the obvious lines in plain sight?

I don't know about a sniffer, but I'd think if you're losing refrigerant that quickly you'd maybe be able to detect the leak through low-tech means like applying a soap-solution.

Is there a way to recharge the system without having to buy expensive antifreeze, and try to detect the leak through soapy water? I would guess not, but its worth a shot to ask anyway. I could go through 40-50 bucks pretty quick trying to detect the leak.

Grey market recharge kits are most likely available if you have the right contacts, but it's definitely supposed to be a professionally handled thing. Then again, detecting the leak should be something the pros can handle too.

You can try your local parts store for a leak detection kit. It's a bottle of dye w/ a blacklight and some uv goggles. It's maybe $20. I would start there and see what I get.

Thanks cavette, I will try that if the soap and wayer trick doesnt work. DO you know of a decent name brand to go with?

ok, I just did the uv refrigerant(sp) and looked at all my lines, and nothing is glowing yellow like it said it should! But when I turn my engine off, of turn the ac off, I hear a hissing sound coming from under the dash. I would assume this is my evaporator. I am doing this in day light, do you think I wouldnt be able to see the yellow dye in daylight? I asked the guy at advance and he said it doesnt matter if it is day or night? I dunno? Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

On mine it was a whole lot easier to see the dye during the night.

well, I tried it at night, and needless to say, I found my problem! Thanks alot. Those guys at advance are about as lost as I am!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh well, thanks for the help. I am gonna go tomorrow and get the part, hopefully I will see the guy that was working today. huh, I even had to make 2 trips there so I could get the hose that you screw onto the can of freeon. He specifically told me,"thats all ya need bub!". Oh well, I probably shouldnt even bother asking them ?'s about my reverse sensor either...

Shew, I hate to be such a pest, but advance doesnt have a clue! Does anyone here know the name or part # of the steel hard line for your a/c that runs from the bottom of the radiator to the inside of the cabin? I just need the info so I know I am ordering the right part. Advance said it was the discharge line something or another blah blah. But mine is all steel hard line and the picture showed a line that nhad some hard line and some rubber line, thanks for the help!

Oh, by the way. I saw the yellowish glow where glue was once at. I pulled the protecting foam off the line so I could take a better look for leaks, and now all of that is glowing, do yall think it could be the glue instead of the uv dye?

first, find a different parts store. i work for an advance, and honestly, i know the kit dye he gave you. i've not looked at my a/c system in a long time, and i cant remember how its routed, and mine is on a 2.2. So, that being said, look at your two lines. The line with the service port on it is your low pressure line, and the other is the high pressure line. those lines USUALLY come as a set, and cannot be purchased separately. to be quite honest, i've got many years experience working on cars, and i'll tackle most any job (elbow deep in a1986 rx7 rebuild currently) but when it comes to a/c systems, i would not even think twice about getting it professionally serviced. if i really found i needed it that bad, first place i'd go is to someone who is licensed.

Well, thanx for your support of your job. And I will take all you said into consideration when I go to a different store to get the part.

well, this is my last attempt b4 I take it to an expensive shop. But my question is, I THOUGHT I saw the leak. but when in fact it was only the glue that was glowing yellow. I can not find any leaks.... So, what is up with this P.O.S??? haha! ANY suggestions at this point is great, I dont want to be out 2-5 hundred bux.

Okay. Are you sure you checked our the compressor area really well? That's the most common place for a leak to occur. If you don't see anything under the hood then the next step to me would be the evaparator in the car.

All I know about it it that it's up inside the dash covered completely in a plastic housing. Maybe a haynes manual has the instructions? I'm not sure.

I must admitt. I didnt go over the compressor to look for leaks as well as I did all of the lines. Do you think I probably need a new can of uv freeon by now? I am going to go get dirty and try to look real hard for the dye around the compressor. And the evaporator, shew, I dont even want to fool with that thing! HAha! But if that is what it means to fix it, then that's what I will have to do. I am hoping I can see the leak on the compressor so I dont have to dig into my dash.

Well, I just looked at the compressor, and the whole thing is covered in what looks to be uv dye. But it could just be rust on the compressor that is showing? I dunno? I didnt feel like fooling with it that much tonight. I will try again tomorrow... Thanks for the compressor idea though. By the way, is there o-rings or seals in the compressor that can be replaced? If so, then I might have an issue with that. Thanks a bunch! To everyone who has helped so far!
