so today i put some racing seats in my cav. took out all the old belts and also installed racing harnesses. now i have the little man sitting in the seat with the airback in front of his face on in my cluster. anyone know what is going on there? i took and plugged in the old driver side factory female belt section with connector hoping thats what it was but the light still stays on. id like to keep my airbags functioning if all possible. please let me know what you can come up with thanks!
When you removed the old seat belts, you unplugged and removed the sensor that confirms when the seat belt is latched. It was the wire and connector that was under the drivers seat.
Do you have the buckle part in the driver's latch? If not, the car thinks you don't have your seatbelt on. I don't remember if it's supposed to be open or closed circuit to ground.... but if I recall correctly, if you just disconnect the connector entirely (open circuit) it thinks the seat belt is closed. My dad figured that out on his old 97, because he never wore his seatbelt (bad dad!!) but wanted rid of the chimes and warning light.

thats the weird part though. the seatbelt light does not flash or anything to tell you to put it on. its the airbag light that is on. i would think that even without wearing a seatbelt, the airbag would still go off.
Well... then chalk it up to coincidence with the timing and all, but I'd say you've got an airbag fault.... which requires a professional scan tool or GM Tech 2 diagnostic tool to diagnose.
You didn't have seat-mounted side airbags did you?
I'm not sure but isn't there air bag sensors or boxes or something under the carpet by the seats? My uncle runs a body shop and has all kinds of books on air bag diagnostics that tells where sensors are and such though. I could grab on for the cav and see what it says and try to help you out if you wanted? hold on i know what did it maybe. Did you remove the original seat belts? if so that is why the light is on becuase when you wreck there is something like a explosive charge on the belts for when the bags deploy. When the bags blow it sets off the charge locking the seat belt. In turn when the charge goes off you got to replace the whole seat belt assembly to get the air bag light to go off.
o and also i belive your airbags will not function if you have the belts removed. You could leave the seat belt assembly that is in behind the plastic and just cut the belt and the light should go off.
ill get it scanned by my friend at the dealership
ok well you could toss both belt assemblys in behind the plastic and plug them in to see if the light goes off. I'm telling you that is what it is if it had a connector on it. In which i bet it did being a newer j. Just put the belts in and see what happens.
ok so i went to my friend at the dealership... we tried to scan the car with the tech 2. eveything was good until we found out that the tune that was put on my car was a different vin number so the bcm and ecu could not communicate and once i pulled the plug for the seatbelt it felt the need to communicate between the 2 but could not. so i went home and changed the vin using hpt and now have to spend $80 to get the SID(air bag box) reprogrammed...
just an FYI to check your vins before you tune...
Is the light still on? If so i'm telling you put the seat belt assembly back in behind the plastic and see if it goes off. On newer cars like i done said it is a safety feature built in on it to endgage when the bags pop to keep you from flinging foward and then the bags going out in which would slam you back real hard. I mean honestly how hard is it to put the belt assembly in and try and see. You don;t have to put in the part for the belt to clip in just the other part. O why do you have get it programed agian just because the bcm and ecu couldn't communicate. I don't see where that would have anything to do with the airbags. Thats like saying if you change the ecu, bcm, or cluster you have to reprogram the aribags which isn't true.

are you @!#$in retarded? He told you TWICE already he pluged in the seatbelt and it didn't change.
And the seat belts on "newer cars" is not whats on J-bodys, it has nothing to do with the airbags. The buckle ONLY effects the seat belt warning light, it will not under any circumstances cause an air bag light to go off, as John said if you unplug it completely it disables the seat belt warning, it will not throw an air bag fault.
BTW just to clarify because obviously your head way up your ass but you think you should be giving advice......he plugged in the buckle, which he told you... the belts themself do not have ANY sort of connector, there is nothing to plug in. Puting them in and cuting the belt will do absolutely nothing excpet cost you money if you want to go back to stock.
