Anyway to see if your Starter solenoid is Stuck

Hi

I've been told it might be a bad starter solenoid that is draining my battery to 6.70 Volts

I wanted to know if theres a way with out putting a brand new one to see if its bad,I know they are only $12 for a new starter solenoid but does Pep Boys,Advance auto parts do anything like this testing .

The car starts fine,No grinding nothing but my battery keeps going dead,was at 11.23Volts and now 6.70Volts

Have No system only a Alarm

you could just unhook the power from the starter sometime then check the battery later on. be careful when reconnecting the battery after unhooking the starter tho, make sure you aren't crossing any leads or grounds, might just want to tape off the wires.

Take a current draw measurement with everything hooked up.....how many amps (hopefully mA) is your system pulling?

Can you do this with a DMM,Do you have a picture of the Tool I would need

Also a load tester,I was told the Battery has to be disconnected when doing this so I can't have everything hooked up right???

When using a load tester YES discon the battery cables only. BC u are only load testing the battery itself. I would think based on many yrs of exper typically if a solenoid is stuck it does one of two things. 1 the starter stays on sounding like a noisy biatch or u have 2 starter does not even attempt to turn the flywheel.Now I realize spec situations vary and would do the load test and check the alternator while the car is running and with lights on,heat or ac and radio to see if the bat or alt r failing.I would not right off rule out the alternator bc if ur batt is charging up some but not to at least 12 volts would lead towards a bat going out or the alter starting to lose the ability to fully charge the battery as it should.If u want u can go to advance or auto zone for a free check unless u just want to do it urself. And also if the solenoid gets stuck a hammer will free it up but,ultimately the starter will die bc it has dead spots which caused the problem initially.Hope this helps answer a few ?s
