Friday, May 23, 2008 3:39 PM
i searched on the forum and nothing helped i went to work one day and car started fine went to work then car sat for hours went out to start it and didn't want to start. tried popping clutch and nothing, all fuses are good and relay.next day hit the tank and started right up drove it home and parked it. so after all this i figured it was the fuel pump but since then i started the car like 20 times with no problem. This morning started right away came to my house and went back out to start it and nothing the pump doesn't turn on. all fuses and relays good. hit the tank and nothing and then it made a weird noise like if air shot out and then went to start and started right up then turned it off and then started again.turned the key to listen for pump and it turns on.so from this i dint think its my pump maybe in wrong. i think its a wiring problem or something electrical because the pump wasn't turning on and i dont want to pay 300 for a pump and it doesnt fix the problem i dont have the money unless i have to. all comment and help welcome

First thing you should check when it does start is fuel pressue, should be no less than 50psi.
Check it again when it does not start (key it up a few times, and leave it in run, engine off)
Pressure should be steady between 50-60psi, if not, the pump is bad if it's real low, or if it bleeds off slowy, the pressure regulator is bad. It is realatively easy on an eco to test this, there is a schrader valve on the fuel rail right on top, hook the gauge up, and see what happens.

^^^other things to check for is a possibly clogged fuel filter, and there is a service bulliten about a mesh screen being clogged up, but that requires removal of the gas tank and fuel pump to check, so in that case might as well put in a new one.
We recently had an eco in the shop with the same problem, replaced the fuel pump, and all was well.
And yes, the problem was intermittent, took a few days for it not to start before we could properly diagnose the issue.

You have to buy pump with the sending unit (around 300), unless you find a high perfromance pump or a used pump. My pump failed and I actually upgraded to a venom high perfromance fuel pump for $150. With it, you unhook your pump from the sending unit, and put in the new pump.
