I am looking at repairing a crack in my exhaust.... and was wondering how hot a stock exhaust would be???? I found a 2 part epoxy that is commonly used on engine blocks etc.... it will work but it says not to use on exhausts that output around 500-600 F.... does anyone know roughly how hot a stock exhaust would get ?
Also I am aware that a metal weld would be better... however where the crack is.. it would be impossible to weld while the exhaust is on the vehicle... and the bolts attaching the exhaust to the cat are way to rusted... they would have to be ground off

Here are two choices for you to choose from both which I have used and both WORK. You can buy a product calld muffler mend(name may vary) it comes in a tube and u apply it to the leak area and let if sit for at least 24 hrs if u can if not at 12.Second buy a product called quick steel comes in container that looks like it holds quarters and u cut a piece of the tube like puddy and kneed it meaning work the grey/black until it is uniform in color apply it to the area u are fixing and it will CURE in like 5 minutes.Quick steel is sold at walmart and auto zone, advance etc and this stuff is GREAT.I have used to fix exhaust manifold leaks and will work to the lettter. The only down fall to the muffler puddy paste is it will deteoriate over time and u would have to reapply or repl the part and this is based on my own exper. That is my recommendation and either will fix the issue and both are under 5.00 wow.
hmmm I used this cold weld stuff... my father works at a place that fixes train locomotives.. and they use this stuff all the time on high-temp parts..... it comes in two tubes... one black one white.. which you mix together to form a grey paste... I did 3 layers.... let it dry over night... drove to work this morning not a problem..... when I got it back home I let it cool and went under to check it out.. .the stuff is rock hard... supposidly after 15 hours of drying it can withstand 3000 psi and can be drilled into... I understand it's most likely only a temporary fix... but hell it's a lot nicer then the sound that was being put out....
