Everything acting weird!
Saturday, May 17, 2008 10:06 AM
Ok I posted this in the wrong area before I think, so here goes again:

Something weird's going on with the '05 SF.

I got in the car last night and started it up, and when I put my foot on the brake, it would not let me shift out of park. I scratched my head and shut it off, then started it again and everything was ok.

When I got home, I turned it off, and pulled out the key, but the running lights and stereo stayed on. Obviously I couldn't leave it like that all night so I unhooked the battery for the night.

This morning I hooked it back up, and now the stereo won't turn on at all, and the instrument cluster does not work. The odometer shows, but the speedomenter, tac, temp, and gas gauges are all dead.

Any ideas? Hopefully something easy to fix? And cheap?

I had this problem. (the shift problem) I could shift out of park, and alot of times couldnt get into park if i was driving. it was caused by a faulty ignition. The dealer changed it out and hasnt come back. (under warranty). I

for the second issue (radio) when u shut off the car the radio should stay on until u open your drivers side door or ten minutes (which eva come first lol ). as for it not working now, maybe u blew a fuse. I would go through ur fuses for ur dash/radio and see if any are blown, if so replace them and go from there.

^^ it should say " i COULDNT shift out of park"

Yeah, the radio normally stays on til you open the door. Mine would not shut off (DRLs didnt' turn off either) even when it was wide open.

I checked the fuses, and I don't see anything related to the stereo or instrument cluster being blown, so I'm guessing it might be some sort of ingition problem. Grrrr!

Just thought of something else, for what it's worth. The other night when I got home from work I noticed the Theft System and another light was blinking. Shut off car and started it again and it was fine. Perhaps related?

The BCM (body control module) could be bad.

Hmmm I'll have to look into that. If I take it to a shop can they tell me if it's bad? And more importantly, is it something I can grab at the junk yard and swap out myself?

I agree on the BCM. it controls everything in your car. It can be pulled from a junkyard too...

and I don't think any shop can test it. I'd let a stealership look at it. You could also have a bad ground somewhere...

Any idea on the price of a junkyard BCM?

Ok just a little update. I noticed this morning that the trip odometer is stuck at 72.2 also.

(maybe I should just buy a horse)

Well, if you look on car-part.com, a boneyard search engine, you can search local inventory.
I looked for my car, and average price was $125.
I does depend on what options the vehicle has, as to which BCM is correct, so call or look it up for more accurate prices.
I have no way of knowing this is your problem, but it sure sounds like it.
This part is buried in the dash- left side, and it's just plug and play if thats it. The keyless system if it has one may have to be programmed by a dealer, like an instument cluster.
To avoid any @!#$, just take it to a GM dealer to isolate the problem, it's gonna have to be programmed anyways.
The only problem with that is politics with used computer parts and programming and warranties.
If it is the cluster, chevy and pontiac are interchangeable 2000+

Sweet.... locally one w/keyless entry is only $50.

Called up the dealer this morning about running diagnostics. They said it's going to cost me $99.50 to isolate the problem. Grrr! But oh well, it's got to be done.

Hah! Success!

Luckily I stubbed my toe on my old factory stereo that I never threw out, even though the backlight quit working on it. I took out the aftermarket one and plugged this back in at lunch time, and what do you know? Radio is working, gauges are working, odometer shows the 16.3 miles I put on over the weekend that weren't showing up before.

If I didn't know better, I'd think that that little $39 Scosche GM 2000 module that gives you the door & headlight dingers and switched power for the radio has a burnt smell to it.

Sure is a lot easier to replace that than the ignition switch/bcm/cluster/whatever else I thought might be the problem!

did that stop the shifting problem too?

Well the shifting problem had only happened once, but yeah, it's not doing that.
