Odd coolant leak, plz help!!
Sunday, March 23, 2008 4:39 PM
I have an odd coolant leak that I cant seem to figure out, the coolant is dripping from beside the lower motor mount, the side towards the engine, not sure where it is actually leaking from though can't see any leaks from hoses or anything. Also, it only leaks once in a while, I can drive 5+ days straight 30 miles or so, no problems, or I could pull my car 10 feet into the garage and park it, it starts pouring out from that area. And it is a steady flow, not just a few drips when it does happen. Within 2 minutes Ill have to refill coolant. The coolant does not seem dirty or anything, almost as clean as when I put it in. Can anyone tell me what the problem would be, or possibly give me some suggestions on how to fix this... Thanks!!

My best advice could give just allow youre car to idle, Then watch and see if you can see anything leaking.

The leak is probably coming from the weep hole in the water pump. It means the seal inside is n/g and the bearing may be close behind. Change the water pump and all the hoses with it.

Thats what I was thinking it would be, I never had problems with water pump come up before so I wasn't sure and I figured I would ask before I started ripping things apart lol. Thanks for the help!!!

check ur water pump by looking at the weep hole when the car is running and see it there is any coolant coming out. And also is urs a 2200 OHV?

If it is the 2200 ohv Check the water outlet pipe which runs from the passenger side of the head and wraps around the front of the engine. They are known to leak in the corner after it comes out of the head. Mine did and it drained the surge tank in like 2-3 min. cuz of the flow.

before you condemn the water pump, make sure its just not coming from the overflow.

K, checked all of the above with no luck... It's kinda hard to diagnose because it only happens once in a while. I think in the past month it drained out about 3 times. Now that you mention it though, it is running out below the water outlet pipe, and my car is 2200. Think a bump or the engine rocking could knock the pipe lose and cause it to drain out? Pretty sure it is not the overflow, that was the first place I looked and no liquid was around it. If it turns out it is that pipe how much of a pain is it going to be to fix it?? Think I read somewhere they don't sell those at parts stores, not 100% sure though. Thanks for the help, keep it coming lol.

I dont think that a bump or the engine moving would make it leak. Because of the DEX-Cool Coolant that pipe will rust out from the inside. I had to order mine from the dealer it run about $88 for a new one. But it was worth it. How many miles do u have on the engine??? mines at 99000 and it just went.

Its not too bad to replace it, i drained the cooling system, disconnected and removed the alternator, disconnected the coolant lines from the metal coolant pipe(The radiator hose, heater hose and the vent hose), disconnected the water temperature sensor, then remove the 13mm bolt on the top of the pipe, and then there is one 13mm nut on the side of the head, and then wiggle the pipe out of the head and remove the pipe. lol

I also replaced the temperature sensor and the thermostat as well.

I will look and see if i still have the GM Part Numbers for the coolant outlet pipe and the gasket. The pipe cost $88 and the gasket was $1.50

Im in altoona, so if you can get all of the parts, i wouldnt mind helping u out on the weekend.

have you been in any accidents?
mine started a small leak after an incident with a deer... and it sits on the lower rad support, and drains out every few days/weeks/ sometimes it does it every time i look, mainly when i park facing downhill or make a turn... idk what else it could be everything has been said. im replacing my radiator tomorrow, so ill let you know if that fixed my problem or if we both have the same problem.

K cool, that would great if you could find the part #. Ill shoot you a PM if I'm going to need help to set something up. Car currently has about 139 k miles on it, so yeah it's getting up there. Pipe has some surface rust on it so I was thinking about replacing it anyhow. May be a few weeks though, just replaced ignition control module, and few other ignition components, and property taxes are due soon. Thanks for the help!

I know you said you checked the weep hole on the water pump but did you check both of them? There's one on the top and bottom of the water pump. When mine failed the top weep hole was clean and dry but the bottom weep hole on the water pump had coolant leaking out. I had to use a 2" TELESCOPING MIRROR and angle it under the water pump. Then use a trouble light to reflect the light off the mirror and show the bottom weep hole. If you haven't looked at the bottom weep hole I would try this first before you spend the money on the parts listed above.

Just my two cents.
