Hub Assembly Press In Gasket... help!
Friday, March 21, 2008 11:50 AM
Hey Ive done some reading on hubs removal and what not.. all ive seen in here is:

The bolts get stripped or broken with removal.. thats if you use the wrong bit..
The Axle nut gets loose.. thats if you reuse it im guessing..
But really nothing on the press in seal/gasket..............

Im going on my third hub assembly.. the last two times i replaced them.. i did not press in the gasket/seal to keep the gunk out of the hub.. and a month later it failed again
Ive tried to beat the seal into the housing.. tried to press seal in with the hub and bolts.. lubed the crap out of the seal and tried to beat the seal into the housing...

IDK !!! hahaha the seal does not press into the back of the housing does it? i would feel stupid... ive picked up a 2" black iron nipple and im gonna try to beat the crap out of the press seal to get it seated...

Does anyone have any Suggestions? please?!

Yes, it goes into the back side of the assembly, and it should seat flush with the metal. Make sure you clean the rust off first, that will help a lot.

so it fits on the rear face of the hub right? im not crazy?
Yeah the two times i replaced it i got the rust out, i got the metal to a polished look and used a 1/2 can of pb.. haha still could not press the little punk in there.. am i just not hitting that thing hard enough? hahaha

the weird thing with the seal is its short.. and it has a huge lip on it.. when i press it in it, the lip should fold over the hub right? or is the seal the wrong one???

this thing is drivin me crazy haha

Are you talking about the front hub? The wheel bearing correct? We do not have a seal stock, and you are not going to get the seal to work with our set-up. Even if you get it on the bearing, it will not allow the bearing sit all the way flat. I have replaced mine and did not use the seal and no problems.

hmm then why the heck would i be having so many problems with mine?

Ive had a recent alignment done that was good.... new axles.. new suspension.. new calipers and rotors.. what else hahah

Could the lock nut be comming loose and making the same noise as if it were warn out?

I live in Southeast alaska.. we breath salt with air here.. the corrosion on cars if pretty amazing... i want it to seal if i can make it haha. i dont want to replace it a fourth time if that seal works

idk it seems like the seal presses in though.. it just has to bend the flat tabs into the housing

Is it possible the main nut is getting loose, sure. Did you check it? Easy to do. Does the wheel bearing feel bad? Usually you can turn them by hand and tell. I know people to have issues, but they are people who do lots of auto-X.

Are you trying to put it in backwards? The lip of the seal should sit level with the surrounding metal after the seal is fully pressed in. I've done at least 5 bearing changes, getting ready to do 2 more and I've never had a problem putting the seal in with just a rubber mallet.

NO HUB SEAL ON THE CAVALIER/SUNFIRE!!!

The extra seal that the hub comes with is for another application like maybe an Alero or Malibu. I already went through this a few months ago. You'll never get it to work.

yup, they always give em, but you dont need them for this, i spent time looking how it went, but it never did, the only place it goes is in the trash

Whew.....HaHaHa, I thought I was the stupidest person ever when I couldn't figure out where those things went ( all three times I replaced Hub Assemblies)

Also, I found that my reoccurring problem with my Hub Assemblies was likely due to a Not-So-Tightened bolt after install causing the trans axle to sit shallow in the Hub shaft. To ensure it's on there I'd just get a shop to hit it with an air gun.

lol...A buddy and I pondered this little gasket for quite a while. After a few beers and trying every possible way of fitting the thing in or on any part of the bearing we figured it wasn't needed. I'm glad I got some confirmation on this! Slap on the "O" ring on, slide that puppy in and drive it.
