ticking/rattling sound 2.4L
Monday, March 10, 2008 7:55 AM
My car is a 99 2.4L cav Z24 5speed. it used to be my brothers car but he blew the first engine by not checking the oil, pretty sure he blew a bearing. the car is still mint so i decided to put a new engine in it. after the swap to a new 2.4L from a 2000 cav z24 i notice that when my car is in neutral i hear a squeaking noise coming from under the hood, this isnt the biggest deal, im guessing its just a belt but also when accelerating in my car i hear a ticking/rattling sound (more of a ticking sound) the sound is only heard when accelerating not when idling and only during low rpm's. any idea's or suggestions of what this may be or what to do would be sick.

the squeak you hear is most likely either your serpentine belt or tensioner... as for the rattle/tick.. I have no idea

noise under accleration could be a exhaust leak as well. Check the bolts on the exhaust manifold. Noise in neutral could be belt, TOB (throw out bearing) noise. Push the clutch in and see if it goes away. Also could be the AC.

Ya when i push the clutch in the squeak goes away and im not even sure if my A/C works as this is a new 2.4 the original was blown but i know the AC didnt work on the original. the squeaking doesnt happen to much i just wanna take care of it before it gets bad. my first motor was a 2.4ld9 it was blown by my brother because he ran it dry on oil. when the new engine was put in... from the time i picked it up its made the ticking sound... my only guesses are that 1. the mechanic didnt mount the tranny right or something because the new engine is a 2000 not 99 and car is a 99 and 2. my brother F#$%ed the drivetrain when he blew the old engine... anyway im not a mechanic so im not sure if it would even be either of these. i just hope this info helps so you guys can help me diagnos wtf this is. im just really hoping the ticking sound isnt a bearing in the works of blowing because i definitely cant afford another engine in this ride. anyway any help or suggestions would be great... and as for squeaking sound. i checked if alternator was loose and no dice its nice and tight so im checkin all the belts next.

The noise that goes away when you push the clutch in is your TOB. They are known for this. I would not worry about. Was the clutch replaced when the new motor was put in?
