rod bearing question
Tuesday, February 26, 2008 7:07 PM
is it safe to replace a bearing with a used one (as long as its in good shape)

should i be able to just feel the crank to see if it needs to be machined.

is it worth it to replace all four at once or do they not blow that often?

any links to a tut

if the rod has alot of play in it is that a tell tale sign?
-(it should have some right? but like in the lateral direction along the length of the crank)

replacing any engine bearing with a used one is generally a bad idea, as they would be broken in in 2 different engines. To me it's worth it to replace all, but its a matter of preference, generally one is ok, it's not like your doing a full rebuild. just make sure to get some plastiguage to check the oil clearance, if its too far gone, installing the new bearing will mean nothing.

Why does everyone want to cut corners? Put new ones in and be done with it. If you put a used one in you have no idea how the used bearing is worn.

Running your fingernail on the journals will allow you to feel scratches in the crank. Also get yourself a vernier caliper. Use it to measure the journals. Measure one end of the journal and measure 90 degrees from the spot. Then repeat at the other end of the journal. This will tell you if the journal is out of round and/or tapered and needs machining.
