Engine Reving

I go outside this morning and jump into my 96 sunfire gt. I quickly start it up, and then jump outside to clean the snow off. A few seconds later I realize a ton of smoke is coming out, and the engine is reving really high. I look inside and it's at idling at 4k. I quickly turn it on and off a few times and it stays up at 4k. Well, I let it go, and after a minute or two, it goes down to 1.5 or so, but then it keeps fluttering a few hundred rpms. just a constant voom voom voom voom, probably about 2 cycles a second. Once I give it some gas, it's ok, but it does feel a bit different when driving. But when ever I pull up to a stop sign or light, and goes back down to idle speeds, it starts fluttering again.

Anybody have any ideas?

Maybe clean the IAC valve with some throttle body cleaner although it may be on its way out.

Just to follow up on this, I searched a dozen different sites, trying to find out the most probable cause, more than likely the IAC vavle. I had a maintance books at home on the sunfire, so I broke those open and figured out what was wrong and how to fix it. I open the hood and looked at teh IAC, and simply enough the the cable had just fallen off.

I ended up taking it off, cleaning it off and all, but over all it was the easiest fix to my sunfire to date
