ABS and/or Sticky Caliper Problems
Friday, February 15, 2008 1:00 PM
I have a 97 cavalier 2.2ohv 5 speed. The previous owner said he liked to pull the ebrake and spin around a lot. After awhile of this when pressing in on the normal brake the car pulls to the right. The faster you are going the more it pulls to the right.

He took it to a dealership to look at it. Now I can't remember everything he said but they said something was wrong with the ABS sensor. Something like the sensor doesn't squeeze the rotors the right way. He never got it fixed because they wanted over $1000 to fix it.

Because of this the car feels like it shakes a bit when turning to the right. This is only noticeable if I am driving fast to the right. For example, driving onto an on ramp to the highway.

Does this make sense to anyone?

Otherwise the brakes work fine. ABS also works if I am on snow/ice and I lock up the brakes. Any more information would be helpful.

Sounds like when I bought my car. Breaking form 100km/h would cause the whole car to shake! The guy that owned it before me changed the break pads all break lines, and the abs unit and it still did it. I changed the drivers side caliper, fixed the problem 100%. Does the wheel in question get really hot after you were driving for a while? Thats a good way to tell. Check your tire pressure after a drive, you should notice the sticking wheel's pressure is a lot higher then the others. Should be a cheap and easy fix.

I am not sure which wheel is pulling. He told me he replaced the brake pads and rotors less then a year ago. Once it warms up I will take the wheels off and look at them.

After hearing that line, you should have turned around and walked away from the car.

Well he was the 2nd owner. I have known him since 1st grade and he only charged me $500. The rims and tires are worth 500. :-)

I am honestly used to it and just turn the wheel left when braking. I was just curious if I could fix it myself.

no need to take the wheels off or wait. take the car for a drive. do some braking, normal stuff. go around and feel the rims and check the tire pressure. if there is a sticking caliper, the heat from the friction build up is generally transfered to the rim (it can get THAT hot). the heat should also cause the tire pressures to go fairly significantly.

this should lead you to your sticky brakes.

im assuming the passanger front caliper. its like $30 CDN where i am.

sorry, also forgot to mention it may not be brakes either. in my 98 4dr alot of braking issues were fixed when i replaced the worn out control arm bushings. one side was warn more than the other, so it would compress the a arm farther back when braking. this cause a pull.

If the car was but through all the ebreak spins, it is very possible the suspension is in horrible shape. This could be causing the pull, which may be completely unrelated to the sticking calpier. Sounds like you have a sticky caliper, and a bad control arm or arms.
