Finally got it started, now problems
Friday, February 08, 2008 6:50 AM
I have a 96 Z 5 spd. I just put a new engine in my car and had a heck of a time my first time. But I got it started yesterday and it is now idling at 2600rpm. Starts up at about 3000 but slowly goes back down to about 2600. What the heck is going on? No check engine light either. But my drl lights flashes the whole time the car is running. Really strange stuff. Also it is smoking like a chimney, a whole lot of white smoke from behind the engine. Anyone have any ideas. Thanks!!!!

HOw long have you let it run for? The smoke is probably nothing. When we have done motor swaps we usually get some smoke from burning off grease/oil from the manifold that we touched etc..... Your high idle could be a vaccum leak.

yea sounds like a vacuum leak.

yea i think it is a vacuum leak a will post a pick of a vacuum line that i found that didnt get on the car but it smokes really bad, i let it run for about 45 seconds 3 times and it was really bad everytime and the longer is ran the worse it. could it be rings, i have had rings smoke like that before

Where is it smoking from? As long as the engine coolant temp is good, and it has oil let it run unitl the car gets to normal temp. You will be surprised how much stuff gets on a motor in a swap that will burn off. I'm not saying this is the case, but seeing as it has only been running for like 2 and half mintutes total you are not getting to temp. It is also possible the ECU has not reset and learned it's self yet. Let it run for 5-10 minutes what collant temp and any other gauges you might have, as well as look for leaks etc.... Then see what the smoke is like.

That go to a little black like bos by the AC compressor (has to do with evap). The other end does go to the TB spot in the picture. That should fix the idle, now let it run.

i thought the middle vacuum line went to the evap can??? so where does the middle vacuum line that is connected to the tb in the picture go?

middle one(big) goes to the brake booster.

other small one goes to firewall then to the hvac controls.

do what john said

yea the yellow circle is the brake booster the red circle is to the evap can by the ac compressor right and then the one with the arrow goes to the firewall for the hvac controls? where at on the firewall. but if that last vacuum line just goes to the firewall for the hvac controls that would not effect my idle would it?

Alright a little update, car is now idling at 4500rpms. this has got to be more than a vacuum leak, what sensor would make it idle like that? IAT? Thanks guys also If anyone can tell me where the farthest right vacuum line on the LD9 runs to around back on the motor that would be awesome

Ok the hose you posted the picture of this one:

Is for the EVAP. The hose for the HVAC is a smaller hose like the one for the FPR. The one for the HVAC goes on the empty nipple in the other picture. The EVAP goes to the left of the brake booster and the FPR to the left of that one.

right i got all that but where goes the hvac one plug into on the other end i cant find it on the firewall. also do you have any more ideas on the high idle, like i said it is up to 4500 now and i never touched anything. all i did was leave it over night and went out and started it up this morning.

The HVAC hose goes into the engine harness right by the starter. If you can't find it cap the nipple on the TB so it does not suck air. Until you have that vaccum leak fixed no need to worry about high idle.
