whenever i back out of my driveway (slowly), i hear a "pop and a spring noise from my right rear section. could it be a broken strut mount? or a loose spring? any thoughts? ill look at it, but i would rather not remove it until i know whats goin on. any easy ways to see?
im on KYB struts and lowering springs (1.5") and they have about 1200 miles on them.
I hear the noise from my 96 Cavalier usually when I turn right. I couldn't find out what causes it so I took it to a mechanic and he says the front spring must be shifting on the pad making a pop.
yea more than likely the spring isnt seated right
alright. i guess ill whip that baby off again and give it a shot. could the cold have anything to do with it "re-seating itself?" or maybe when it settled, it loosened up a bit.
I hear this noise everytime i put my car in reverse. I know it's not the struts or springs because i replaces them a few times. I was told its my rear brakes locking up and poping
it could be the spring...
I'm having a similar problem and I'm checking the following:
intermediate shaft - leave the car in park and turn the steerring wheel check for any clunks, if you hear something its the intermediate shaft needing some lube.
HOW-TO on Intermediate Steering Shaft Lubrication - Maintenance Forum - thats the thread for it
lower control arm bushings - make sure they arent seperated
sway bar bushings - check if they are tight, if not they could be the problem
and other things like ball joints/tie end rods could be problems tooo
Why are people having bushings go bad on 5 year old cars? That crap should last at least 10! I know a good number of people with recent and late model cars of totally different makes all with struts, bushings, etc. all going bad!

We all drive in a yellow Cavalier...
I have that problem as well, if I turn hard it will pop, and won't do it again untill I turn the other direction. I have been over the whole front end of my car and have yet to find it. The reason stuff isn't lasting like it used to is because almost all new cars are complete peices of crap. I have yet to talk to anyone around Prince George that hasn't chanced the steering rack in their 3rd. gen before 100,000.
could it be hazardous to drive on this condition? im going to take it in sunday when my friends lift is open, and me and him will take it apart and tighten them all up and check for damage. til then, i do a daily commute... cautiously recently... is it safe to continue driving?
My guess is your upper strut mount. Over time the bearing wears out and gives the rod room to 'pop" from side to side, and that is the sound you hear. I had that problem in the front after lowering my car, after I replaced the mounts the popping stopped and I noticed a huge improvement in ride quality as well.
If you do replace the mounts (they're like $90)...get ones made for 97-99...they are rebuildable...instead of replacing the whole thing you can buy a new bearing for about $20 and swap it out.
i tightened all of the springs down when i took them out to figure out what it was... it seemed to fix the problem for a while, but a bumpy trip down I-95 and my daily commute to class on south carolina roads have loosened it up AGAIN. im thinking about replacing the rear strut mounts for now, and the fronts later. any thoughts if it could be something else?
have you also checked your lug nuts?? if one is loose, when youre turning the friction could be causing the wheel to move on the hub causing a poping noise. i know that when i was puttin on my summer wheels i forgot to tighten a couple lugs on one of my wheels and when i backed out of the garage i could hear a pop. i'd say its something within the workings of your suspension or possibly wheel area.
gl on findin git!!
