ringing sound from belt drive area

On my 98 cavalier with the 2200 engine theres a ringing sound coming from the belt drive area. It just started up recently. it seems to increase with rpm, but not much. The belt is new also, thanks!

I tried, but with only my cell phone to record with, you cant really make it out. Im pretty sure its the compressor though, I turned the clutch and it felt hard to turn, whereas on my cougar it turns freely and easily. My cavalier was being good earlier today too, no noise.

Are you missing your cordless phone? if so check your engine bay. The only other ring I can think of is the power steering pump (with low fluid or bad internals), check the clutch for a fluid leak which is a strong indicator of a failed compressor.

yeah when the ringing started the first thing i checked was the power steering pump, it was a little low so I topped it off. I didnt see any leaks by the clutch, but the system probably doesnt have any freon in it since it doesnt kick on when i turn it on. I checked the relay and its good too, btw.

I was going to say the same thing.

As far as the ringing sound goes...

Does it sound like one of those old phones that Alexander Graham Bell invented or is it more like the Verizon wireless tone?

tensioner pulley is good. Its coming from the front bottom. It sounds like a heat shield, which I have all checked. Pretty sure its the compressor though.

compressor. i replaced my tensioner twice, and it worked for like a day or two... but yeah im going to just rip out my a/c sometime.

it sounds like a jingling telephone, but a little more metallic... thats the best i can do to describe it, its been kind of warm here, and mine doesnt "clank" to much when its warmer, just when its bitterly cold, but its been doing it every day for a couple weeks now.

thats it, what it exactly sounds like. Im just gonna get a shorter belt and bypass it if theres another warm day. and yes it only does it when its really cold, like below freezing.

yeah, im going to go the same route. im actually going to pull the entire thing out though, just because why have unnecessary weight on the car. ill replace it eventually, but i need money in order to do that, so the "free" route is just pull and play. good luck.

oh! when you are re-routing the new belt, if you need to get it past the tensioner pulley, i found if you lower the motor from the car by jacking the passenger side up, get another jack andlosen the mounts, lower the motor slowly so you can access it, and then jack it back up to put the mounts back on. worked for me on the tensioner, dont know if you will be replacing that though.

Check under your car, look where the exhaust pass between the oil pan and the dog bone. There is a little bracket that old the pipe to the engine. Sometime it broke and the other part is "jiggling" on the exhaust.
