Trac off light, won't start?

Going off the description that my coworker gave me...
They've got a ~2000 Sunfire/ automatic, not sure if it's a 2.2 or 2.4.
Was driving home last night in the snow and the "TRAC OFF" light came on. She pulled over on the side of the road and the car stalled. She tried to start it up again, but it only briefly stays on.

The local dealership claims that's a sign that the alternator is going/went bad... I'm not sure I trust their logic...

I did a search on here and came up with nothing...

Any experience with this?

mine has done the same thing (2.4 auto). mine was fuel problems. check fuel filter and make sure the gas lines aren't freezing up (not likely tho since she was driving when it happened). i ended up replacing the fuel pump. i hope this helps

so why did she pull over?? is she sure that it was" trac off "and not "trac low"
take it to an autozone or advance and they will test the batt and alt for free

This happened to me tonight, on my way home "trac off" light came on and the rpms started fluctuating. I pulled to the side thinking something was wrong wih my traction and put the car in park to see if that would turn the traction back on. That didn't work so I turned the car off and went to restart it to see if that fixed it and it wouldn't start. It will turn over and fire but only run for a couple of seconds. I am going to check to see if its getting spark and fuel pressure tomorrow but am hoping someone has some advise.
