How do I get a "REAL" service manual
Wednesday, December 05, 2007 7:09 AM
When I was a mechanic in the military... we had actual GM service manuals for every specific GM vehical we had..... I've been wanting one for my Sunbird but the local GM dealership says they don't make them anymore and can't order me one.....

This has to be BS..... does anyone know where I can get one directly or any supplier that isn't a jack hole? My haynes manual sucks... and chilton is eaven worse.

Thanx guys.

Try Ebay.

www.helminc.com <-- These guys are the official distributors for GM manuals, as well as others. They have no problem selling to the general public. Odds are, even if your local dealer would sell you one, they're just going to call up Helm and mark it it a bunch for the trouble. If they say they can't get it, it's because they couldn't be bothered picking up the phone.

I just noticed they're only selling expensive reproductions. I've got a couple used copies here at the shop where I work, if you're willing to pay for shipping from Canada.

Thanx Geeky.... but I kinda pulled a typo and meant to say that I want a manual for my 97 Sunfire ... for some reason I have a tendancy to say Sunbird instead of Sunfire even though I've had my 3rd gen for a while....

I'll check out that site though.... thanks.

Yep... they have them for $135 ... sweet.

The damn dealership in town told me that used ones cost over $200 and you can't get them anymore and they are only available on CD for dealerships and repair shops..... those liying bastards.....

Thanx man...... that site should be usefull many times over....

I've got a beat-up set of '97 J-body manuals here too for $55. I tend to look at them every so often for my Cavy.

Yes, but only brand new copies. Since I'm in Canada, the mark-up and shipping means that you'd do better paying the $135 the Helm wants.

If I have a 2002 Ecotec, should I get the 2002 one, or a 2003 one?

I'm going to assume there's something about Ecotecs that I'm not aware, which will make that question seem less obvious? Or perhaps not. My general advice would be to get a manual for the year you have.

Another bit of information for anyone reading this thread is that Helm also has the GM Transmission Unit Repair (or TURM) manuals, which are a great source for those of you tearing apart trannies. They're more overhaul-oriented, and get into more specifics than the main shop manual.

Well, the Ecotec changed a little bit in 2003, as far as I'm aware of. Pretty much just the fuel rail, but I was wondering if maybe they wouldn't have the Ecotec covered in a 2002 manual because of the half year change. I was thinking it might only cover the 2.2 and 2.4L.

I just checked a 2002 set, and you're quite right -- the Ecotec is not in there.

Well then, I guess I'll be asking for the 2003 year manual for Christmas. Thank you

since people are asking... how about an 01 cav 2.4L?

The 2001 manual should be fine. The only reason I need a year up is because half way through 2002 they changed from the 2.4L DOHC to a 2.2L DOHC that appeared in 2003+. They don't list the 2.2L DOHC in the 2002 manual, so I'm getting the 2003.

Ron -- I must have had an early edition of the 2002 j-Body GM manual before, because I just picked up a different copy that in fact does cover both the LN2 and L61 2.2 engines. It seems like if you buy a new copy, it will almost definitely have the Ecotec. I must have just had bad luck when I picked one up before and gave you misinformation. Sorry about that.

Alright, thanks for that. If worse comes to worse, I'll exchange the 2002 -> 2003 if for some reason I get one without the L61 coverage. Thanks.
