Stephen, I've been told by three Saturn owners with the 5-speed that GM's engineers at
Saturn have the very best transmission lube and service recommendations, better than
Chevy and Pontiac dealers for the same transmission....

If you have a Saturn dealership nearby you may want to discuss your situation
with their personnal....

Let us know what you find out...

On my 2002 I installed Amsoil ATF at around 80,000km, and it still seems to be working nicely at 201,000. It definitely seemed to help shifting when cold, although it's still pretty stiff in the winter.
My brother hasn't changed his yet at 170,000km, but his has always felt nicer even with the factory fill. His car has the Ecotec where mine's the LN2, but I thought that the trannys were the same. Maybe just manufacturing tolerance issues?
From what I remember reading, Saturn has a special fluid that helps to reduce noise, but as I've never experienced any unusual noise, I've never looked into it too much. It only holds 2 quarts, so I would just buy a good quality ATF and change it. GM doesn't specify a change interval, but it made me feel better to have changed mine
The old oil looked perfect when I drained it anyway, so maybe they do know what they're talking about...

while on this topic. is there any plus to using royal purple trans fluid rather than other brands?

i use the oil, and i like the way it makes the car feel, i wonder if that would be good to use in the trans also

the royal purple is specifically made for manual transmissions that use ATF it's a bit more sticky than regular ATF but still shifts easy even in the cold
