Tie rod issue
Saturday, October 20, 2007 8:24 PM
Well, I was washing the car the other day and noticed this.

What is that part called that the Tie Rod is on? Should I replace just that part (if possible) or buy whole new Tie rod ends? Right now the plan is to buy whole new ends, but all the kits I've seen don't have that torn piece. Thanks guys

Tie rod end. Replaced as one piece. Unbolt at tie rod. Dont turn bolt very far or u will loose alignment. unbolt underneath and pound the sucker out. Think mine was $20 to $30.

Eh, I can see what I got. Basically it's that "boot" that the tie rod connects to.

best I got right now... It's hard to get that shot without taking the wheel off, heh.

Ahh, that boot is part of the tie rod. It will be on the new one. Just ask for an "outer" tie rod. Simply loosen the nut behind the tie rod where it screws on to the steering rack. Be sure to mark where it was originally to try to keep in in alignment. Then take off the nut on the bottom of the tie rod. If it spins and won't come off, you will need to use two wrenches to get it off. You will notice the end of the tie rod is hex shaped, so you can get one wrench on that, and the other wrench on the nut, and get it off. Then, pound it out with a hammer. You would usually use a tie rod remover to keep from destroying it, but since you are replacing it, it's no big deal. It may be stuck in there pretty good. If pounding doesn't get it out, then go get a tie rod remover. You can rent one from an auto parts store usually for free. Hope this helps.
