Next week im goin to be going and lookin at a 98 Sunfire 2200 5spd that a guys tring to sell. Right now it doesn't run right. Only runs on 2 cylenders and backfires/misses. He had it to a Mechanic and they told him that 2 of the plugs need changed, the Coil packs need to be replaced, and the plug things that the coils plug into need to be replaced. The car only has 80k on it. What would cause all this to fail? Im just tring to get some info on what to look for when i look at the car. He only wants 600 for it and im sure i can jew him down on the price some. thanks guys.
could be possible ive had problems with my coil packsit would spark and stuff but run like crap swaped em out runs just fine now . 600 or less jump on it unless there something major wrong but sounds like the coils are bad so you got ur self a steal
Overgapped plugs will strain your coils more.

Bad wires can do it too.

I have 54k miles on my car, and about a week or two ago the coil pack went out. Not sure why, it just did. Cost me about $350 to get 4 new spark plugs, and a new coil pack, labor included. For $600 it sounds like a good deal, grab it up I say.
Also, a quick question since I'm already in this topic. You'd figure spark plugs/coil packs would only last a certain amount of charges. Would I be wrong to assume that an engine that is constantly being revved high will have failing spark plugs/coil packs sooner/more often than an engine that is never revved high? Thanks.

not sure but i got my car at 35k and i drive it pretty hard all the time allway reving it to 4k and some times higher i replace coils at 164k
Thanks for your help guys but he ended up sellin the car as i was typing this uplol
heat or fluid (oil or water) can cause failure as well.
I know the second gens were notorious for blowing coils due to heat.
