ETS light

long time reader, first time poster. sorry about the long post and big description, but I want to explain it the best I can. BTW i drive 2001 2.4 sunfire

problem is with my ETS light, and sometimes CEL, coming on. And it's the same problem with the other posts regarding this, it shifts hard afterwards and it idles really low, so low that it almost stalls. I have searched around here, but i'll describe what happens with mine, to compare if it is the same as with everyone else

the most common time it will go on is when I go up a hill, and on top of the hill I let go of the gas pedal and it shifts into overdrive.
thats when the light(s) come on. it's been doing it for about 2 weeks now, and I have find a way to stop it from happening, but the problem still is not fixed, which I would like it to be. right after I step off the gas pedal, if I tap the brake pedal before it goes into overdrive, the lights wont show up. another way is to never step off the gas pedal completely, just barely pushing it down, and when it goes into overdrive the lights wont show up. putting it it neutral, shutting off the engine then restarting it will also shut off the lights.
also, instead of taking off normally from a stop sign or red light, if I step on the gas real hard for a few seconds, the problem seems to disapear altogher for a few hours. even if I tried to make the lights come on they wouldnt!

I have not checked what codes shows up when the CEL shows up yet, however I did purchase online a code reader yesterday, so I should get that hopefully sometime this week or next week.

I checked the vacuum lines and they seem to be fine.
by checking around here and a couple of other places, here some of the way people have(or so they say) fixed this:

vacuum lines
IAT sensor
O2 sensors
plugged Cat
spark plugs
TPS

any ideas, or should I just started gonig down the list and replaing one by one.

again sorry about the long post, I just wanted to give as much detail as I could.
thanks.
Matt

should I change both to be on the safe side? or should I take a look to see if one of them appears damaged in some way?
