97 2.4L while I am replacing the water pump, what else??

97 sunfire with 2.4L with now 123k on it and runs well. I was dragging my feet on the water pump as it was lightly seeping out of the weep hole hoping it would last until I have the other engine rebuilt and ready to go. Well it did not.

It is only my summer ride and wanted to get 10k more on it before the engine swap. I did not want to dump a bunch of new parts in it if I can get by with what is in there.

Got the water pump installed with new thermostat. Was going to install new damper pulley seal.

So should I replace the timing chain, tensioner, tensioner shoe, the chain 3 guides? What about the exhaust gaskets (manifold to head, and flange) and a new inner and outer timing cover gaskets. The gaskets all look good and was thinking of re-using them.

All the guides and tensioner shoe looks good with minimal wear. The tensioner appears to be working well and pushed right in and released good. The engine is very clean on the inside and no signs of abuse.

I am a novice with the quad4, not a novice at wrenching. So back to my question, What else should I replace to get about 10k more out of it?

Thanks in advance.

I would probably replace the timing chain since it's already off anyway along with the tensioner shoe, and make sure the teeth on the gears arn't worn. You probably dont "need" to replace them... but it's kinda one of those "while your in there" things.

Also... since you have it torn apart anyway... now would be a good time to install some cams ...

I wouldn't replace the chain or the guides, and don't worry too much about the tensioner if it was set correctly. The tensioner is the biggest problem after removal. The chain and guides are good usually for the life of the motor.

If all you wan't is to get another 10K out of it.... just make sure all the gaskets are doing there job, and that everything is together good, and that shouldn't be a problem. You probably would have gotton another 10K out of it without even touching it. I quess I misread what you where saying.

Check the water outlet on the driver's side of the motor, just below the power steering resevoir. This outlet is known to leak coolant and is unreliable. The o-ring gasket and the outlet should run you about $30 from the dealer. From my experience it is more likely for this part to leak (2.4L motor), more than the water pump. Are you certain that your water pump needs to be replaced?

The 97 shop manual I have shows the old style tensioner and does not mention the new style.

So the next question is, what year did they start using the newer style tensioner ?
