I have a 2001 5spd and it will start without having the clutch pushed in, this includes in gear. I assume it has somethnig to do with the clutch pedal position switch. I searched but could find no info. Any help will be appreciated.
It is the clutch switch. Check to make sure that it isn't bound up (up near the firewall, by the clutch arm hinge).
Since its a manual, car doesn't know that its in gear, hense the need for that switch.
This isn't a huge problem. Some cars actually have override switches for this in case the engine fails in traffic. When you've got people in the car, it's easy to push and steer the car off the road. When you're alone, it could prove very useful to be able to crank the car safely off the road.
