Round 2, Same problem
Friday, September 14, 2007 8:40 AM
Ok, since my car only runs for 2 seconds, I checked and tried to reset the Anti-theft system. 10 mins. later nothing still....same results. Runs for 2 seconds and cuts off. What should I do now, start thinking about relays? Crank relays, fuel sensors? I talked to a tech and he said there aren't and automatic shut offs in the 2001+ Cavaliers.

The Only lights that come on are the Air Bag light(stays on) and the Check engine light. I'm start to suspect its some sort of relay ot sensor. Any ideas?

Did you try scanning for any codes? It's a long-shot, but who knows. A faulty neutral safety switch shouldn't let the car start at ALL, but who knows...

I'm new to this whole J-body thing, so I'm not sure what you mean by "scanning codes." Please elaborate more....

^^^ OMG yhtbkm...

Scanning codes isn't a j-body thing its a car thing. You scan codes the same on our cars than you do on any obd2 car.

To simplify.... codes are what makes your check engine light come on.

You need a a scan tool to scan for codes.... if you don't know anyone with one, Autozone will normally scan your car for free.

I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but going by your recent posts about this problem, you honestly might be better off taking the car somewhere to get fixed.. you'll probably spend less $$$ in the long run that way.

I think what he means is: Get a scanner (diagnostic trouble code scanner) pluged in your cars computer and get the info that the computer has stored, get the codes and search on the sticky "what your CEL means" some auto parts stores will do it for free. BTW for the car to shut off like you said either it is not geting fuel to stay on or the spark needed to light the fuel is not steady, so I would start by checking or replacing the fuel filter.

No its cool guys, no offense taken. I am a airhead when it comes to automotive mechanics. My first cavy, it was a 96, was totalled when I wrecked it and rolled it twice around some really loose gravel S turns. This is my first Z24 and I love it. When I get her fixed up, I'll post some pix for it. Appreciate the help guys, and I look forward to talkin to you guys again when another problem occurs or asks a question I know a little about...LOL

Ok check it out my Cavy is rumblin again. This is what it was. I intsalled a new cd player, and when I unplugged my battery it wiped out the access code that my original radio was sending it. So after getting frustrated, I tried everything I could think of before finally giving that idea a try. Apparently thats what it was b/c she crankedright up. Thanks for all the help anyways.

What year is your car? I have never had a problem with any of the J's I have owned to not start after a radio install or having the battery disconnected. If it was starting for 2 seconds then it was theft lock.

Its a 2002. And it was my theft lock that was doing it. After regular radio was reinstalled, everything was normal. When I put m y new cd player in, my gauges stopped and my a/c wasn't cold. Now that the factory is in, normal.
