On my way home from work at 5a.m. this morning, cruising on the interstate with the cruise locked at 65mph and i look at my tach and its reading 5000rpms! I'm thinking there is no way it could possibly that high, the engine would be roaring, the temp gauge would be up, and my fuel gauge would be going down rather fast, none of the which was happening. So eventually when I got off the interstate, and had to stop my tach was reading 3500rpms in idle! Finally when I get home and turned it off, the tach only went down to 2000 and wouldn't go any lower.
The car only has 25,000 miles on it, how could anything go wrong with it this soon? This really frustrates me considering my hours are getting cut at work and I'm kinda strapped for cash this month. I want to repair this for as little money as possible. Any one have any suggestions to what the problem might be and what to do about it? Thanks
Did you buy it new? It could still be in warranty...
Either way, if your cluster has taken a @!#$, just get a new one off ebay from any 00-05 cavalier or sunfire, they can be had for as little as $35, takes about 20-30 minutes to change it out, and the mileage and everything will show up correctly on the new cluster.

Buy stuff from CarCustoms Ebay! Won't be disappointed!
Nah I bought it used in December. Its factory warrent ended in February and the gm certified used warrenty ended in may. I guess its ok though since I've been wanting to do the red light conversion on it, so I got on ebay and found a sunfire gauge cluster for $30 shipped. Never been used either. Going to buy it tommorrow when I get paid

Welcome to owning a GM. Anything can go wrong all the time. Personally, last time I thought that, I broke down and got stranded, and I ended up missing an exam at university and shelling out over $1000.

high rpms arent gonna make the temp gauge go higher.. if anything tehy make it go lower, and for fuel doesnt matter if u were WOT its not noticeably enough to "drop" enough to see it. if ur engine is at 5k u should def be able to hear it
