well the exhaust of the car has about 200k miles, i was thinking the cat but i heard when they go bad its like a rotton smell? this is more of a rich/gasey smell when its running it really gets bad if its sits.
It has a new engine, car runs perfect just the exhaust has tons of miles..

relax ....you prolly got a bad cat, get under the car and bang it with something, if you hear some rattling your cat is definitely gone. Either way it sounds like you need a new one,,,,,NOW SAY THIS PLACE IS GREAT!
A bad cat shouldn't cause a rich smelling exhaust, but a rich exhaust WILL cause a bad cat eventually. Check your plugs for fouling, something in the ignition may be in need of maintenance or replacement.
If the plugs ARE fouled, replace them, I also noticed in your registry mention of a Z-24, you don't mention anything else, so I will assume its the LD9 2.4 engine. The IDI on those isn't the most reliably engineered piece, so that could be causing your problems too.
Brand new engine, it smelt before with my old engine also, new plugs gets great gas mileage, just smells like an old muscle car when your behind in, i get so smell in the cabin. I keep it very well maintained
now that i think of it, i put a new fuel pump in not long ago. Ever since then ive heard this weird metal tapping noise at idle, u kinda have to listen to it. I always assumed it was the pump for some reason now im actually thinking maybe its a piece of the cat inside thats broke or something tapping. Either way im sure with 200k on it that cat cant be in the greatest cond. No smell under the hood or in cabin, strikly from the back of the exhaust
If you hear a rattling, do what illdwes said and hit the cat a couple times and listen for it, maybe your cat IS falling apart inside. You said brand new engine, are the ignition components brand new as well, or did they come off the old engine? Might get your fuel pressure checked too, the FPR may be going bad and letting too much pressure to the injectors, although that'd make it run poorly at part-throttle and you are not saying as much. I'm still thinking the engine is running a bit rich.
engine runs perfect, entirely new engine it had like 20k miles on it and probably not more then 40k right now runs perfect, idles perfect gets great gas mileage. im going to check out the cat tonight, i do have a CEL of course but onyl from my lack of EGR on 00+ engine thats it though
Hmmm. Definitely weird. That cat IS old as all get out, so yea. If it is bad (probably is) this'd be a good excuse to redo your entire exhaust system. A good Magnaflow 2.25" cat, and either a full catback, or something custom (2.25" if you can) with a good resonator (recommend Magnaflow here too) and a muffler of your choice. The Magnaflow cat can be had on ebay for about 75 bucks, and the resonator for about 60, if you're interested in part numbers, let me know.
No one has questioned the o2 sensors, When was the last time that these were replaced?

True that, I didn't question it since he is saying its all new, good mileage, and so on. Front one could go bad and not throw a code, so yea, check on that. Rear one wouldn't cause it to run rich, but could be bad so that its not indicating a bad cat.
