Daytime Running Lights/High Beams

Hi all, bit of a problem. I dont want to tear apart my steering wheel, although I have already started. When I take my e-brake off, my daytime running lights kick on, but then they start flashing, and then turn off as a check engine light comes on. (the one with the wrench on the left). Also, when I turn my high beams on the lights turn completely off. If I turn the lights on after taking off the e-brake, the engine light doesn't come on at all and I have headlights, but still no high beams. Any suggestions? I hate wiring...

The wrench is the service soon light, not the check engine light. They're distinctly different... and mean different things

If the DRL light starts flashing, that's indicating there's something wrong with your bulbs. Chances are good that you've got a burnt out high beam filament... try replacing the bulbs.

Seeing as they're BOTH out when you change to high beams.... either both bulbs are dead (high beam filament or bulb, I don't know what kind of car you have... since your registry is empty)... or you do in fact have a problem somewhere else.

2002 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24 with 2.2 Ecotec...ya, I'm going to look at the fuse box under the hood first, than the bulbs. But ya, both bulbs went at the same time, so I'm guessing electrical issues.

Hard to say.. the 02 Cavalier has two headlight fuses, one for left and one for right. It uses 9007 bulbs, so the power is shared between the high and low beams. There's wiring to the high beams from the headlight switch, to the bulbs and also branches off to the BCM and then to the cluster.

Have you done any wiring modifications in the dash/BCM/steering column recently?

not to thread jack but i got a similar problrm....my low beam is out...i dont get a service light but i have to drive with my high beams on. Both high beams work but my driver side low beam doesn't work which causes me to have ONE DRL! Blubs are good and has been like this since i got the car...(before i put in Alarm/R.S which is hooked up to parking lights anyway). Im thinking its the harness....should i even bother taking it to the dealer?? i cant drive around with my high beam forever.....

Lol..quite the problem. I assume that the wire has been pinched in the fender from an accident. I am going to trace the wire from the light to find the problem, seems like it is shorting out for sure. Im also going to check the negative cable on my battery, and check my grounds.

I had a similar problem in my 04 Cavalier after my wife wrecked it. The harness on the passenger side was cut by the bumper reinforcement. There is a small device located on that side that was no longer connected. It has a two contact connector. To remedy it as well as the missing turn signal connectors, I used a 2003 wiring harness i bought used on eBay. It has worked for the past year and a half now. I hope this helps.
