So I had a junkyard pulling a motor for my 97 sunfire 2.4l, but I got a call from them saying they ended up cracking the block pulling it. How they did that I dont know, they said they could order another motor in if I wanted to pay an extra $250 for shipping. So of course I declined.
I decided to tear into my motor that spun a bearing. It spun the #1 rod bearing not bad but still the crank is toast and so is the connecting rod. All the other bearings look fine. So Im now just going to partially rebuild the motor. I have most of the parts set up. But mainly I am just doing a crank kit and new connecting rods and possibly pistons. When I do a crank kit do I need to get the block machined? Also what does a set of stock compression 40 over pistons and rods usually cost? What about going to a higher compression piston? Anything else I should do, have done, or any vital information I should know? machining?

I just did the almost exact samething. I have a 97 Sunfire GT that I rebuilt due to a spun rod bearing on number2 piston. I bought a reman crank that came with the bearings and had the rod machined for $30. I then bought a full gasket set, rings, and lapped the valves. Threw it all back together, it runs extremely well and pulls hard. for pics of the rebuild goto

I should also add that instead of buying new pistons I used paint thinner and a brillow pad to clean all the carbon off the pistons and then honed the block myself using a hone and drill.
