so we thought it was the timing chain tensioner that was messed up (sounded like the timing chain was smacking the case) so we pull that apart....its fine....now we are stumped.....my mechanic swears its not the wristpin...he said when he put his hand on the case you could feel the tapping clear as day.....didnt do it at idle...only wen i reved did it make the noise....any ideas?

I had the same symptoms as you. It did NOT knock at idle and it was a rod bearing. I pulled the oil pan and found metal all in it. I found very little metal on the drain plug.
ok so i got ahold of a 2000 Z24 cav.....to do the swap to my 98 2.4.....i would just need the motor and ECU correct? is there anything else special i will need?....im gonna love this cause now i can do a supercharger reflash

You don't need the ECU to put the 2000+ motor in your 98. You use the 98 wiring ECU, injectors, EGR, exhaust, and exhaust gasket. To put the 2000+ ECU in you need to swap all the wiring over because you need the BCM from the 2000 cavy.

ok good to kno thnx
