Unanswered Fuel Question
Saturday, June 30, 2007 6:25 PM
I did quite a bit of searching around to hopefully correct my problem. I found one post with the exact same situation I am in but it went unanswered.

I changed the fuel filter on my fiance's 2001 Sunfire 2.2L, it would not start after that and I found that when the feed line is removed from the filter, there is still no fuel coming out. It should be shooting out with the pressure it should have.

Can someone tell me, is it the pressure regulator or the pump? I can hear the pump running when the key is turned but nothing. Hopefully its not the pump. I priced it out at over 250 dollars. Any help is much appreciated!

The only thing between the fuel tank and the filter is the pump. Your problem is either with the pump or fuel level is so low the pump isn't submerged.

the car has about 1/2 a tank of fresh fuel in it. i think even the slant of the driveway with the jack under the car..dont know if the pickup wouldn't still be submerged, but that is a point i didnt think of. I guess im going to purchase a new pump in the morning, thanks!

Know what? I just thought of this...
I changed my fuel filter last month and I remember having to try to start the car several times before it would actually fire. How many times did you try it with the line detached?

For several hours. I also managed to kill the battery in the process, which i also replaced. I would connect it, try, then disconnect and check fuel several times.

i assume you primed the system before attempting to start....

turn the key to the on position three times before engaging the starter???

other than that i dunno... ive never known a pump to go out because of a filter change, and its a pain in the ass to change the pump... you have to drop the tank...

Well i bit the bullet and got a new pump. Took about 45 mins to change, including dropping the tank. Car fired right up. Must have been just a coincidence with the filter change, i guess they just tend to let go. The car does have 108k on it, and up to yesterday was still running the factory plugs/wires and fuel filter and pump. Thanks everyone!
